Advertising with streamers in Germany: a guide for brands
As of 26 October 2026, over the previous seven days, Trymacs led Streams Charts' ranking of German-language channels with 1,730,569 hours watched and 30,273 average viewers; eliasn97 averaged 28,251 viewers and Papaplatte 24,757. The market is large, and it comes with written rules: ad labeling, gambling, youth protection and, for whoever runs a channel, broadcasting law. Below: where the audience is, how to buy it and what to settle before launch.
Where the German-speaking live audience is
- Twitch. Twitch reported, via GamesMarket (24 April 2025) and Mein-MMO, that in the German-speaking region viewers watched 1.3 billion hours of gaming content and creators streamed more than 49 million hours in 2024: first in EMEA for hours streamed, second for hours watched. In Streams Charts' 2025 Twitch ranking (15 December 2025), eliasn97 came seventh worldwide with 68.6 million hours watched.
- YouTube. Google's ad tools, cited in DataReportal's “Digital 2026: Germany” (5 November 2025), put YouTube's reach at 64.7 million users in late 2025, 77.1% of the population: the whole platform, not live viewers.
- TikTok LIVE. The same report gives TikTok an ad reach of 23.7 million users aged 18 and above, 33.9% of adults. TikTok Shop, including LIVE Shopping, launched in Germany on 31 March 2025; in May 2026 TikTok announced Austria, while Switzerland isn't on its list.
- Kick. Kick's own EU transparency data, cited by Mein-MMO (29 June 2026), ranks Germany third in Europe by users, after Poland and Spain.
- Events. gamescom in Cologne drew about 368,000 visitors in August 2026 (PocketGamer.biz, 1 September 2026), and its program passed 624 million views worldwide (GamesBeat, 30 August 2026).
These are estimates, not audited measurement: a plan rests on the media-plan forecast and verified delivery. And a German-language channel isn't a Germany-only channel. Its audience also sits in Austria and Switzerland, which have their own laws, so ask for each channel's audience split by country before you approve it.
Three ways to advertise with streamers in Germany
Platform ads. Twitch sells through Amazon Ads: unskippable video in ad breaks, display and, in Germany since May 2025, Creator Sponsorships (channel skins, streamer readouts, sponsored subscriptions, follower promotions) bought through Amazon DSP (ChannelX, 30 May 2025); see Advertising on Twitch. YouTube is bought in Google Ads. Kick launched Kick Ads in August 2026, but the reports we reviewed don't say which countries it is sold in (Advertising on Kick). TikTok's tools bring viewers to your own LIVE, not into someone else's (TikTok LIVE advertising).
Sponsorship or integration. The streamer presents your brand in their own words. With the right creator, no format tells a story better. But every channel is a separate negotiation and fee, nobody guarantees how many people see the mention, and the report comes from the creator.
In-stream advertising, bought as media. The streamer adds an ad layer to their streaming software, OBS for example, once. APIQ shows your creative in it: a bottom or side banner, full-screen video of up to 30 seconds, a poll, rich media or Frame-roll, where the stream shrinks and your brand fills the frame. The broadcast keeps going, ad blockers don't remove the creative, and one campaign covers Twitch, Kick, YouTube Live and TikTok Live.
You pay one CPV rate for every streamer within a format, fixed in the media plan, for a guaranteed volume of verified views. Each view is checked on a screenshot with computer vision, the audience is scored on 15 anti-fraud parameters, and suspicious traffic is neither counted nor billed.
| Platform ads | Streamer sponsorship | In-stream advertising (APIQ) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How you pay | Usually per thousand impressions (CPM) | A flat fee per streamer | Per verified view (CPV), one rate per format |
| Who picks the channels | The platform, within your targeting | You, deal by deal | You approve the list and can remove anyone |
| Interrupts the stream? | On Twitch and Kick, ad breaks | No | No |
| Guarantee | Impressions bought | None on views | Guaranteed volume of views |
| Proof | Platform report | Streamer's report | Screenshot of every view |
Labeling ads in German live streams
- Media law. The guide of the state media authorities (Leitfaden der Medienanstalten, version of May 2025, in German) says that for videos, “at least on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Twitch and in media libraries,” the advertising rules for broadcasting apply, citing §§ 8 and 10 of the Interstate Media Treaty (MStV) via § 74. If the product is at the center, the content needs a permanent “Werbung” (advertising) label; an ad inserted like a commercial break must be announced with a “Werbung” caption shown long enough or by voice, or labeled for its whole length; a product in a supporting role can be labeled at the start with “enthält Produktplatzierung” (contains product placement). The guide has no separate section on live streams.
- Competition law. Under § 5a(4) of the Unfair Competition Act (UWG), it is unfair not to disclose the commercial purpose of a commercial act unless it is obvious from the circumstances and the omission could influence the consumer's decision. Since 28 May 2022, the same paragraph presumes payment or similar consideration unless the creator shows credibly that there was none (§ 5a UWG; Taylor Wessing, April 2022).
The simplest approach: “Werbung” in the creative for the whole display, and any spoken mention agreed in the contract. For your specific case, check with a legal adviser.
License, gambling and youth protection in Germany
Broadcasting license. Under § 54 MStV, programs with only minor influence on public opinion, or with fewer than 20,000 simultaneous users on average over six months, need no license; the state media authority can confirm this on request. The media authorities' checklist (30 April 2021) says a live broadcast is always linear, sporadic streaming isn't a schedule, and average concurrent users are the usual measure for streams. These rules concern whoever runs the channel, not the advertiser; we give no legal assessment of any channel here.
Gambling. The Interstate Treaty on Gambling 2021 bans advertising for unlicensed gambling and, between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m., advertising for virtual slot games, online poker and online casino games on broadcast and the internet (§ 5). On 11 July 2024, in urgent proceedings, the Higher Administrative Court of Saxony-Anhalt (3 M 105/24) let stand a ban on slot streams by a streamer living in Portugal: they counted as advertising for unlicensed gambling, and geoblocking of the operator's site from Germany didn't remove the advertising effect there (beck-aktuell, 12 August 2024). In APIQ campaigns, gambling and betting channels are excluded by automated checks, and APIQ doesn't accept casino, betting or iGaming campaigns; see Brand safety in live streams.
Youth protection. § 6 JMStV says advertising must not harm minors or exploit their inexperience with direct purchase appeals, and alcohol advertising must neither target children or young people nor appeal to them in particular. Stream audiences are young: Amazon Ads, citing internal Twitch data from 2022, says nearly 70% of Twitch users worldwide are 18 to 34. APIQ checks channels' age restrictions automatically; for alcohol and other sensitive categories, also review the list by name.
What APIQ offers in Germany
Germany is one of five countries where APIQ campaigns can run, with Spain, Turkey, the UK and the US, and one campaign can cover several with one report. You set the country, stream language, category, time of day and frequency. The published case studies are from Turkey, with the same mechanics: for L'Oréal Paris, 367 streamers delivered 800,127 verified views and 11,762 clicks, a CTR of 1.47%. A pilot is the fastest way to get your own numbers for Germany.
Checklist: how to start a campaign in Germany
- Brief. Goal, dates, audience and platforms. A German-language TV spot or online video of up to 30 seconds works as is.
- Media plan within 24 hours. A longlist of streamers on the platforms you chose, with a view forecast; channels are analyzed daily for country, language, category and audience stability.
- Approval. Remove anyone who doesn't fit; the campaign runs only on approved channels.
- Label. “Werbung” in the creative for the whole display.
- Launch in 1–2 days after the streamer and creative list is approved, with online reporting from day one.
- Report. A screenshot of every view, clicks by source (about 80% from the chat link, 10% from the QR code, 10% from the screen) and your own attribution: AppsFlyer, Adjust, UTM. How to read it: How to check that your ad actually ran.
Advertising with streamers in Germany: FAQ
Does a brand need a broadcasting license to advertise in streams? The license rules in the MStV concern whoever runs the program, that is, the channel. For an advertiser, the practical questions are labeling and which channels the creative runs on; check your case with a legal adviser.
What does advertising with German streamers cost? There is no public price list. In a sponsorship, each streamer sets their own fee. With APIQ, the CPV rate depends on the format (a banner costs less than full-screen video), is the same for every streamer within a format and is set out in your media plan. More on the brands page.
Can we work only with our own streamers? Yes, in closed-circle mode. The volume guarantee doesn't apply then, and delivery rests with the advertiser.
